Start is an after school tutoring program for elementary school students and their parents, hosted at a nearby church on Tuesdays. College students meet at Memorial Chapel to carpool over. Start provides a safe space for elementary students to work with University of Maryland volunteers to focus on the importance of literacy, art, and structured play. This program also provides separate space for parental programs that happen at the same time that focus on community building and the sharing of knowledge.

Every Wednesday during the semester, vans of University volunteers go to a neighboring community, where University students tutor and mentor elementary school children (pre-k to 6th grade).  Volunteers help the children with homework, reading, workbooks, crafts and games.

Caring Kids is a mentoring program where college students are paired 1-1 with local elementary students for the entire semester. They read together, participate in the weekly craft activity or experiment, and have fun with structured play.

This mentorship provides an important person of stability for the children and is also very meaningful for the college students.
